Jason Marquis walked 3, struck out 0, allowed Cardinals pitcher Jake Westbrook to collect 3 hits, and was charged with 6 earned runs in 5.1 innings of work last night. Crap like that should get you a loss every time. But hey, Jason Marquis is 9-5, which is awesome.
In dropping game 1 of the series to the Cardinals (9-6), the Padres remain in the NL West cellar at 42-55.

Two up, two down: Cardinals 9, Padres 6 – Jeff Sanders (U-T)
“It was the first time I had run the bases that much since high school,” Westbrook said. “It was a good win for us. I surprised myself a little bit with how well I did at the plate. The biggest thing was we won the game, and it was a fun game to be a part of.” [Thornburg]

Chase Headley was moved into the 2 spot in the order for the first time last night, finishing 2 for 4 with a walk, including this ground rule double in the 9th. Hopefully* it’s a sign of things to come.
*Hope is not a strategy. I know.
