Sometimes things get a little fuzzy after an evening in the pub. Here’s a friendly reminder of what you might have missed while you were drinking.

The Padres (20-20) scored more runs than the Chicago Cubs (21-17) last at Petco Park, 4-3, in the first of three games at Petco Park.

Neither James Shields (5-0, 3.74) nor Jason Hammel (3-1, 3.11) figured into the decision. Shields pitched seven innings, giving up two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out eleven. Both runs came off of solo home runs in the third inning by Chris Coghlan and Dexter Fowler. Coghlan had a second solo home run off Craig Kimbrel in the ninth inning.

Hammel also pitched seven innings with two runs on three hits and no walks with eight strikeouts. Hammel was perfect through four innings until Kris Bryant had a throwing error to first base to allow Justin Upton to get on base to lead off the fifth. Yangervis Solarte followed that up with the first Padres’ hit, scoring Upton from second base.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Friars tied the game at two with a Will Venable RBI single, scoring Solarte after Starlin Castro misplayed Solarte’s ground ball for the Cubs’ second error.

The bottom of the eighth inning was strange, to say the least. Derek Norris hit a two-RBI double to score Clint Barmes and Cory Spangenberg. Barmes reached base on an error by Addison Russell and advanced to second base on a bunt single by Abraham Almonte. Spangenberg bunted and advanced Barmes while Almonte was forced out at second.

Kimbrel came in for the ninth inning to record his eleventh save.

Tonight, the Padres send out Tyson Ross (2-3, 3.94) at 7:10pm PDT to face Tsuyoshi Wada (0-0, 0.00), who is making his first appearance of 2015.
