While You Were Drinking 2014 Game 39 (MIA vs. SD)

Sometimes things get a little fuzzy after making breakfast, brunch, and dinner for the mothers in our lives. So here’s a friendly reminder of what you might have missed while you were drinking omelets.

The Padres inextricably took games 2 and 3 of the series setting themselves up to win 3 out of 4 games if they could win on a sunny Mothers’ Day.

Will Venable led off the game with a HR, Robbie Erlin pitched 6 1/3 shutout innings and the Padres cruised to what appeared to be a 5-0 victory and a series win. But then the wheels fell off as Dale Thayer and Joaquin Benoit surrendered 4 runs. Huston Street took over in the 9th and carefully pitched around the powerful Giancarlo Stanton and a bases loaded jam to get the save. Not bad, eh?

The Padres improved to 18-21 and look forward to a much needed day of rest before beginning a series in Cincinnati tomorrow.

Box Score [Baseball-Reference.com]

“It’s more like what we are hoping for as a group. Some guys are starting to swing the bats better. Guys are getting on base via the walk and the base hit. The last couple of games have been much better in terms of on-base percentage. We need guys on base.” ~ Bud Black [Powers]

Of Note

A bunch of hitters are beginning to make the push toward the north side of the Mendoza Line:

Yonder Alonso 2 for 3 – BA .200

Chase Headley 1 for 4 – BA .195

Will Venable 2 for 4 – BA .194

Alexi Amarista 1 for 3 – BA .188

Heading south:

Yasmani Grandal 0 for 3 – BA .218

Huston Street works in and out of jam.

You could just watch this recap. I think it will give you a good sense of the day.

How did the Padres lose game 1 of the series and then take the next 3, knocking out Jose Fernandez along the way? Who knows!

Erlin is looking really solid lately.
Also, I may have to start following Major Garrett. Dude knows his Padres baseball (today and yesterday).

    • Go listen to the interview/podcast he did with Darren Smith last week. Stellar.
