Sometimes things get a little fuzzy after an afternoon in the pub. Here’s a friendly reminder of what you might have missed while you were drinking.

The Padres (19-20) scored fewer runs than the Washington Nationals (22-17) yesterday at Petco Park, 10-5. The final score doesn’t show how close this game wasn’t. The Friars dropped the last three of four to lose the weekend series.

Ian Kennedy (2-3, 6.75) gave up six runs in five innings on three hits and four walks with six strikeouts. The big blow came from Danny Espinoza’s three-run home run with two outs in the fifth inning. The Padres were up 2-0 at that point. Then, in the sixth, the wheel’s came off Kennedy’s start, as he loaded the bases with no outs. Frank Garces relieved Kennedy and proceeded to give up an RBI single to Bryce Harper. Dale Thayer then came in to the game for Garces. A sacrifice fly and a 2-RBI double later, the Nationals were up 7-2 and never looked back.

Stephen Strasburg (3-4, 5.98) came back to San Diego and gave up three runs in five innings on five hits and a walk with seven strikeouts. Justin Upton had a solo home run in the third inning off of Strasburg and another in the eighth inning off of Tanner Roark. Jedd Gyorko added another with his solo home run in the ninth inning off of Sammy Solis.

The Padres are off today. The Chicago Cubs come to Petco for three games beginning tomorrow. James Shields (5-0, 3.91) takes on Jason Hammel (3-1, 3.11) at 7:10pm PDT.

  • Why is it always The Padres “scored less runs” or “scored more runs” this year? Let’s give the credit and blame to the pitching sometime. Next time it’s 10-5 or something like that, can we say, “The Padres allowed more runs than that Washington Nationals”? (great work, btw…)
