Sometimes things get a little fuzzy during an evening at the pub. Here’s a friendly reminder of what you may have missed while you were drinking.
The Padres (16-20) scored more runs than the Milwaukee Brewers (14-21) at Miller Park last night, 3-0.
James Shields (2-5, 3.12) pitched seven shutout innings on seven hits and a walk with nine strikeouts. The Brewers never really threatened to score after the first inning, when Domingo Santana led off with a single and advanced to third on a Scooter Gennett single. But Gennett was thrown out between first and second on the play then Ryan Braun and Jonathan Lucroy both grounded out to end the inning.
Jimmy Nelson (4-3, 3.51) surrendered two runs five hits and a walk with five strikeouts in eight innings. Melvin Upton Jr. pretty much beat the Brewers by himself, starting with a single to score Wil Myers in the fourth inning. In the seventh inning, Upton scored on an Alexei Ramirez sacrifice fly. And in the ninth inning, Upton hit a solo home run off Tyler Thornburg.
Derek Norris was hit on the hand with a pitch in his first at-bat in the second inning and left the game prior to starting the next half-inning with a contusion.
