Despite what you may think if you follow me on Twitter (or have read this prior post), I don’t hate Dick Enberg. The man is a broadcasting legend. It’s just that I believe play-by-play is no longer his strength.
I think that if the Padres and Fox Sports San Diego want to keep Enberg around, he may be more suited to host the pre- and postgame shows.
If they do decide to take Enberg off of play-by-play duties next season (or sooner), who would/should replace him?
Today Fox Sports San Diego announced that they are going retro for the 1998 game this Friday (6/14). In addition to wearing the 1998 uniforms on the field, Fox is bringing former Channel 4 Padres TV announcer Mel Proctor back into the booth to call the game along side his old partner Mark Grant and 1998 alum Tony Gwynn. Graphics from 1998 will be used and it will be a 1998 highlight reel bonanza. I’m looking forward to all of this for sure as this was one of the most memorable seasons in Padres history.
It is such a brilliant idea to bring back old announcers for retro nights. Although I swear I’ve heard that somewhere before 🙂
There are 19 players from that ’98 team scheduled to attend the game and will be signing autographs at the Park before hand. Notably absent from that list are 1st baseman Wally Joyner, Center fielder Steve Finley, Pitcher Mark Langston and Closer Trevor Hoffman.
Back in 2010 I interviewed Mel Proctor at RJ’s Fro. Here is that full interview.
