Sometimes things get a little fuzzy after spending an afternoon at the pub while playing hooky from work. Here’s a friendly reminder of what you might have missed while you were drinking.
The Padres (44-51) scored fewer runs than the San Francisco Giants (51-44), 7-1, dropping the last two games after taking the first in the three game series at Petco Park.
James Shields (8-3, 3.77) was pulled after the fifth inning, having thrown 96 pitches, with a one-run lead. Shields didn’t allow a Giants run while striking out seven with three hits and three walks. Then, the Padres’ bullpen shat the bed.
Brandon Belt tied up the game at one in the sixth inning with a two-out solo home run off Marcos Mateo. The Giants scored three runs off Brandon Maurer in the seventh inning on two consecutive fly balls that Matt Kemp couldn’t get to. Dale Thayer surrendered a leadoff home run to Brandon Crawford to start the eighth, then gave up two runs on singles by Justin Maxwell and Matt Duffy.
Matt Cain (2-1, 4.09) gave up just the one Padres’ run in six innings, on a Jedd Gyorko solo home run to left field in the second inning. Cain struck out six with five hits and a walk.
The Miami Marlins (39-55) come to San Diego for four games starting tonight at 7:10pm PDT. Tyson Ross (6-7, 3.38) gets the start tonight against Tom Koehler (7-6, 3.38).

Ian Kennedy (0-0, 0.00) pitched just two and a third innings (2 hits, 2 walks, and 2 strikeouts) before coming out of the game with a hamstring strain. Odrisamer Despaigne relieved Kennedy and pitched four and two-third perfect innings with a strikeout.
Tim Hudson (0-0, 0.00) started for the Giants with six and a third innings pitched with five hits, five walks, and a strikeout. The lone run came for the Giants in the top of the 12th inning when Brandon Crawford scored on a single by Justin Maxwell.
Tonight at 7:10pm PDT the Friars have Brandon Morrow (0-0, 0.00) taking the mound against the Giants and Tim Lincecum (0-0, 0.00) in the second game, aka the Tony Gwynn Opener, of the four-game Opening Weekend series at Petco Park.
