This Saturday, April 4th, the Padres will host their annual FanFest at Petco Park. There will be the usual garage sale, catch in the outfield, interactive forums and at 2:00PM the Padres will take on the Diablos Rojos del Mexico in an exhibition game that will be on Fox Sports San Diego.

At some point during that game, Jeff Cirillo connoisseur Brady of Lobshots, Robot Umpire overlord Dex of Gaslamp Ball, and the dashingly handsome Rick from RJ’s Fro, will “take over” the booth alongside Fox Sports San Diego’s Mike Pomeranz.

It will be the 3rd year in a row (2014, 2013) for this event.

It’s been an exciting offseason, hasn’t it? That being said, there are a few things that we here at Padres Public haven’t necessarily been on top of.

Okay, the fact is that Dustin and Nate do a great job of recapping & analyzing trades and roster moves. I, on the other hand, do not. Other than complaining about Alexi Amarista playing center field, I tend to focus on the ballpark experience, media, and public relations.

I guess what I’m saying is that by “we,” I mean me. I haven’t been on top of things.

So, here’s a couple of items that have come up in the last week or so.

The 2014 Padres FanFest has come and gone. We can now consider the season underway.

I love FanFest. Always have. Even back in the days of Jack Murphy Stadium, when it was more or less just a glorified baseball card show, I loved it. Of course, it has come a long way since those days.

Join me, will you, for a rather long look at my day on Saturday.

Football season is over. That can only mean one thing: Baseball season is right around the corner. And the first real event of any Padres season is FanFest (formerly known as FriarFest). This year, it’s this Saturday, February 8th, from 10am to 4pm.

Season Ticket “Members” get in early at 8:30am, with Early Access starting at 9:30am for the general public available by registering here.

So, what can we look forward to this year? Details are still sketchy. The full event schedule is usually not announced until a day or two before. The full promotional schedule for the 2014 season is supposed to be announced sometime later this week and there may or may not be examples of the giveaways at FanFest.

Here’s what we do know:

Back in December, ESPN released the baseball Hall of 100, which if the title doesn’t give it away, is their opinion of the Top 100 baseball players of all-time. Surprisingly (and disappointingly), ESPN did not contact the legendary Old Hoss Radbourn for help on this project, so he offered up some comments about each player on his Twitter account for the masses to read. All of his comments on the players can be found here in one easy to read list and each one is hilarious.

One of Old Hoss’ 55,000+ rabid followers on Twitter is Travis of PunkRockPaint. Now Travis isn’t a hilarious, ex-baseball player who is long dead, but he does absolutely amazing work of his own in the form of creating baseball cards (plus he is also hilarious). I sometimes find myself randomly looking at all his Lost cards, longing to be confused on a weekly basis all over again (I loved that show). His Star Wars cards should be in the Louvre, they are that awesome. He has created posters for musicians like Bushwalla & Steve Poltz that have caused fans to stampede the stage at shows and cause mini-riots. Travis has an overwhelming gratitude for the genius of Old Hoss Radbourns writing, so it was only fitting that the two of them would get together to work on a project. Read More…
