This Saturday, April 4th, the Padres will host their annual FanFest at Petco Park. There will be the usual garage sale, catch in the outfield, interactive forums and at 2:00PM the Padres will take on the Diablos Rojos del Mexico in an exhibition game that will be on Fox Sports San Diego.
At some point during that game, Jeff Cirillo connoisseur Brady of Lobshots, Robot Umpire overlord Dex of Gaslamp Ball, and the dashingly handsome Rick from RJ’s Fro, will “take over” the booth alongside Fox Sports San Diego’s Mike Pomeranz.
It will be the 3rd year in a row (2014, 2013) for this event.
As was mentioned last week, last Saturday brought the semi-Annual San Diego Ted Williams Chapter of the Society of American Baseball Research (SABR) meeting. The SD Central Library hosted, and we had about our average turnout (25-30 people).
I got downtown about 0910, armed with a large cup of coffee, my notebook, and an amplifier. Toting an amplifier through downtown early on a Saturday morning actually helped me blend in. I was amazed at the large number of people already formed up outside the library. I assumed they were waiting to get in until it became clear they were just … waiting.
Several of us got there early to set up; however, Pete Meisner of the library was all over it, having arranged chairs for the attendees and set up a podium for a wireless mike. We brought up a table for check-ins and other items, and moved 3 plush chairs to the front for Jodi, Geoff, and I to use during the round table. That took all of about 5 min, which was great for it left a lot of time for some small talk with a bunch of folks one only sees twice a year.
We delayed starting for 10 min to accommodate the fashionably late. Alan Mindell approached the podium and off we went.
Last Friday night, I had the privilege of taking part in the 2nd (annual?) Bloggers Takeover with Fox Sports San Diego. During the takeover, they give the bloggers a chance to chat about blog-gerly type things for a couple of innings during a Padres Spring Training game. Last year I was joined by 3 fellow Padres Public members Geoff (Son of a Duck), Mike (Padres Trail) and David (Vocal Minority) and also Brady from Lobshots. This year I was the lone Padres Public representative and was joined by Brady, once again, along with Dex from Gaslamp Ball and Steve from Friarhood.
Join me on our journey!
The Bloggers Takeover is returning.
Last year, myself along with Brady from Lobshots and David, Mike and Geoff Young from Padres Public, took over the 5th, 6th and 7th innings for the the “napping” Mark Sweeney and Mike Pomeranz.
This year I will be the lone Padres Public representative, but will also be joined by the returning Brady, Dex from Gaslamp Ball and Steve from Friarhood. We will be having a “couch conversation” during the 5th and 6th innings of the Padres and Mariners game this Friday night. This years version will be moderated by Jesse Agler.
We’ll be set up down the right field line, just like last year, however this year you won’t get to witness my flesh being burned from my body as the game starts at 7:05PM.
Will Jeff Cirillo make a special appearance? Will Dex rise from the dead? Find out this Friday!
In case you weren’t paying attention…
I don’t know how to put this, but we’re kind of a big deal. We are very important. We have many leather-bound books and our mothers’ basements smell of rich mahogany.
Always enjoy responsibly. Don’t read and drive.
