Sometimes things get a little fuzzy after spending a Sunday afternoon at the pub. Here’s a friendly reminder of what you may have missed while you were drinking.
The Padres (63-67) finally scored more runs than the Philadelphia Phillies (52-79), 9-4, at Citizens Bank Park yesterday, avoiding a season series sweep.
James Shields (10-6, 3.78) pitched seven innings while allowing one run on six hits and a walk with eight strikeouts. Cameron Rupp hit a solo home run with two outs in the second inning. Odrisamer Despaigne pitched two innings and gave up the other three Phillies’ runs. Cesar Hernandez‘s RBI triple and Aaron Altherr‘s RBI single added two in the eighth inning. In the ninth inning, Andres Blanco tripled to lead off and Cody Asche ground out to score Blanco.
Alec Asher (0-1, 6.35) gave up four runs in five and two-thirds innings on eight hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Matt Kemp hit a two-run home run with one out in the first inning. In the third inning, Justin Upton hit a solo home run with two outs. Shields helped his own cause with an RBI single in the sixth inning. Yangervis Solarte led off the seventh inning with a solo home run. In the eighth inning, pinch-hit RBI singles from Clint Barmes and Brett Wallace and an RBI single from Derek Norris added on. And Melvin Upton Jr. added the final run in the ninth inning with an RBI single.
