Always enjoy responsibly. Don’t read and drive.
We’ve come to that special time of the season when the Chicago Cubs visit San Diego and we Padres fans get to travel back in time to a quaint little year called 1984. A special time in our collective memories. A time when the Padres were good and Chevy Chase was still funny. How time changes everything. Despite the Padres woeful offensive performance of late, fans still have 1984 to hold on to for a small piece of sanity.
The Cubs arrive for a four game visit beginning today and it marks the 30th anniversary of the historic season in which the Padres finally climbed out of the cellar. For those of you old enough to remember, 1984 is perhaps one of the few moments of grace present in your fanhood.
Gather around kids. Let me take you back to a time where DVD’s and Blu Ray discs didn’t exist. A time where you couldn’t just easily skip to a certain section of the movie. Yeah, sounds crazy right? Well that’s what it was like during the VHS era. I have a handful of Padres VHS tapes that I’m going to show you. I really need to convert these so I have them to enjoy forever and ever, but I haven’t quite gotten around to it yet. I’ll just list off the tapes I have here and “review” them all at a later date. VHS!
This is where we gather from time to time to talk about something big in the Padres world or just the Padres or just baseball. It’s a roundtable discussion. Except, you know, no round tables. This is a Public House…so we’re at the bar.
*All opinions are of those who are attributed to them. No opinion here should be construed to be that of the collective.
Padres Trail wrote an excellent post a couple of weeks ago regarding the most seminal Padres moment. His choice, a fine one, was Game 3 of the 1996 NLDS. If you haven’t read his post already, go check it out here.
This topic got a lot of us thinking “what are our seminal Padres moments?” It’s a somewhat complicated topic for a team with 0 World Series titles and only 2 appearances. But seminal doesn’t necessarily mean “great.” They are moments, for better or worse, that stay with you. An easy way to test what moments these would be for you? They are the first moments that come to mind when you think “Padres.”
Here, we’ve limited ourselves to picking 3 moments in total. Some good, some bad, all memorable.
So, presented for this week’s roundtable discussion, The Bar presents “Seminal Padres Moments.”
