Well technically Jose Valentin doesn’t have a mustache anymore, but when he did have one it was one of the finest mustaches in baseball history.
From Corey Brock earlier today:
#Padres officially promote Dave Roberts as bench coach. Jose Valentin (manager, Fort Wayne) 1st base coach. Replacement to come from within
— Corey Brock (@FollowThePadres) November 18, 2013
We already knew about Dave Roberts taking over the vacant Bench Coach job, left open by the recently departed Rich Renteria. But we were still unsure of who would take over for Doc as the 1st base coach, until now. The Puerto Rican Valentin was originally signed as an Amateur Free Agent by the Padres back in 1986. He would play 5 seasons in the Minors with them before being traded to the Milwaukee Brewers in the Gary Sheffield trade of 1992 (along with Ricky Bones and Matt Mieske).
Valentin would play 16 years in the Majors for the Brewers, White Sox, Dodgers and Mets racking up 249 career home runs before retiring after the 2008 season. He has been the manager of the Fort Wayne TinCaps for the last 2 seasons, making the playoffs both years.
