The Padres have had a discount ticket program for the military for years. Active duty, reservists, and retired veterans have several ways of purchasing tickets, including directly from the Padres or from their local Morale, Welfare, and Recreation office. In order to buy tickets with a discount, all those avenues required them to appear in person and present a valid ID.
That’s no longer true. Today the San Diego Padres and GovX announced the launch of the first online verification ticketing service. The opportunity to buy discounted tickets has been expanded to include first responders. From the press release:
The program, offered through new technology and verification partner, GovX, will offer discounted Padres tickets for those who serve and protect, including first responders, active and veteran U.S. Military and related government employees.
To access the discounts, which are available for all regular season home games, qualified fans can visit the [Military Ticket page] at Padres.com or the designated first responder recognition page on Padres.com. Upon selecting the desired game, users who are not already GovX members are directed to a simple online verification page to complete the one-time verification. From there, users proceed with their ticket selection, where the discount is automatically applied. The purchased tickets can be emailed or downloaded.
The cool part of this is not just the ability to buy tickets at a discount online. It’s the inclusion of first responders (fire, police, EMT, etc) as eligible for the discounts. Those folks put their lives at risk for our safety and security as well, as most recently evidenced by the 19 fire fighters killed fighting fires in Arizona. Traveling to the ballpark to buy tickets was a minor inconvenience for me; not so minor, perhaps, for those battling a service-related injury or disability.
There are also national discounts available for merchandise and MLB.tv subscriptions.
The Padres are one of the first MLB teams to partner with GovX on this discount initiative, and are joined by Oakland, San Francisco, Seattle, Pittsburgh, and the NY Yankees.
To those military and first responders reading this, thanks for your service.
