The Ghost Goes to the Minor Leagues

Some would say I should have stayed there.

Last night, seeing as the Padres had an off-day, I attended the (Padres high Single-A affiliate) Lake Elsinore Storm’s home opener at The Diamond. Unfortunately, the Storm lost to the Houston Astros-affiliated Lancaster JetHawks by a score of 6-5 in 11 innings. However, 7,920 fans showed up to watch and partake in the fun that is minor league baseball.

This is the 20th anniversary of the Storm. They have been a Padres affiliate since 2001, with such notable players as Xavier Nady, Khalil Greene, Chase Headley, and Jake Peavy (who is just one of two players to have their Storm number retired) passing through on their way to the big leagues.

The big names currently (some of which Padres Prospects wrote about here) in Lake Elsinore include Hunter Renfroe, Joe Ross, and Zach EflinWoe Doctor and myself had a chance to quickly interview all of them last week.

And I’d be remiss to not mention the chances to see other team’s prospects and future big league stars. Last night the JetHawks starting pitcher was the Astros’ 2013 first-round pick, Mark Appel. And Carlos Correa, the Astros’ 2012 first-round pick, started at shortstop for the JetHawks. Appel was impressive on the mound, and Correa had some nice plays in the field.

You should get out to Lake Elsinore every chance you get. It’s just an hour away from Downtown San Diego (if traffic plays nice) and truly is a different experience than the big leagues. From Thunder the Storm Dog to the World’s Fastest Squirrel entertaining fans between innings to the sometimes crazy-sounding promotions, it’s fun for the whole family. Not to mention, it’s baseball.

This season, the Storm have brought back some of their most popular — and added a few — promotions and ticket specials. Even without these specials, a night at The Diamond is incredibly affordable, with all tickets priced at less than $15.

If you’re looking for giveaways, the Storm will have a few this season on Saturdays. The highlights for me are June 7 against the Inland Empire 66ers with a team card set as the giveaway. And July 26 against the Bakersfield Blaze they are giving away a Storm hat.

I hope you’ll take my advice and get out to Lake Elsinore for at least one game. Do like I did and go when the Padres have a day off or have already played. Win or lose, you’ll thank me for it.

I vaguely remember them saying that there would be some bobbleheads this year too. There was only 1 Padre in the bunch I believe? I can’t wait to get out there!

    • No bobbleheads on the schedule. I looked. Multiple times.
