Poll: The Padres over the Remaining 50 Games (Part 5)

With ten more games in the books for the Padres the time has come to revisit the poll Avenging Jack Murphy put forth nearly two months ago. The predictions for the Padres over the remaining 50 games were not very promising then and when the team went 2-8 through games 113-122. The Padres turned things around during their next 10 contests and managed to go 5-5 during games 123-132. Then the Friars went 6-4 over games 133-142.

Over the last 10 games, the Padres matched that 6-4 record with the help of a 4-game winning streak that was stopped yesterday by the Pirates.

Using advanced math the Padres are 19-21 over the last 40 games played.

How in the Hell did the Padres pull that off?

Tommy Medica came seemingly out of nowhere to commit unspeakable violence on baseballs.

…and also dress the deer on the basepaths.

Will Venable continues to amaze in the outfield.

What do you think? Was your original assessment on point or do you need to make an adjustment with the final 10 games to go?

I don’t want to toot my own horn, but I predicted a 25-25 record at the start of this experiment. If the Padres manage to match that 6-4 record, I will be confirmed a genius. If not, I’ll just blame Bud Black‘s constant starting of Alexi Amarista in the outfield over Reymond Fuentes.

  • The Padres have converted me. I totally see them going 5-5 and finishing with 24 wins out of their last 50 games.

They’re getting timely hitting and damn good pitching. Bill Center mentioned the last weekend in San Frisco might be for last place, but there’s a chance for second place! The Dodgers are flat after winning the division, and the Padres have four at home against their main competition, the D’Backs. Six down with ten to play is a tough call, but not impossible, with Arizona in Colorado now and finishing up against the Nationals after visiting Petco.

Seems like I heard an under/over of 73 or 74 at the beginning of the season (probably on Darren Smith’s show) and at that point I was going with the over…nine to go and three wins needed to beat that makes me wish I’d have had a thousand bucks and a much more reckless retirement strategy back in April. In my heart of hearts I was hoping for .500 back then, but I guess I always knew twas not meant to be…

I guessed 23-27. Which means they need to go 4-6 over the last 10. Considering I’m posting this comment 3 games into the final 10 (they are 1-2) they only have to go 3-4 the rest of the way. I like my odds.
