It’s that time of year where major leagues clubs have to make decisions on who they want the protect from being taken in the Rule 5 Draft. And the Padres made some hard choices today.

Added were starting pitchers Josh Johnson, Donn Roach, Keyvius Sampson, and Juan Oramas.

Gone are 2B Dean Anna, relief pitchers Brad BrachMiles Mikolas, & Jose De Paula, and OF Jaff Decker.

Anna announced via Twitter that he had been traded to the New York Yankees.

The Padres received Ben Paullus, a 24-year old relief pitcher who will likely start off his Padres career next season in Lake Elsinore.

Corey Brock tweeted out some thoughts about the Padres moves today.

In other news, Padres Prospects definitely had the tweet of the day today after the Padres tweeted out this photo:

Oh, and Prince Fielder was traded by the Detroit Tigers to the Texas Rangers for Ian Kinsler. Meh.

Well, Dean Anna is definitely gone, but Brach, Mikolas, De Paula and Decker are only “gone” from the 40-man roster. They’re available in the rule 5 draft, but still might be retained by the Padres. I’m just happy they protected lefty Juan Pablo Oramas. The scouts don’t see his short stocky build as “projectable”, but any pitching coach who has seen JPO move his pitches up, down, in and out, not afraid to bust hitters inside, knows a successful bulldog pitcher when he sees him.

Anyone else think they should have held on to Decker and DFA’d Guzman?

Jaff was my first prospect crush. When I started following the farm closely (back when it was full of Carrillos and Ramoses and Ben Johnsons) Jaff was the first highly picked high schooler we’d had in quite some time. Seeing someone picked high who actually had a higher ceiling than AA gave me the excites.

I know his injuries kinda threw him off track, and he never adjusted out of his Alderson patiently aggressive mindset… but I hope he sticks around. Ditto for his “brother” Cody… What is the deal with Cody anyway? He can still jack one up every now and then, right? Why not give him some starts at 1B until we find a long term solution
