Memorial for Jerry Coleman Recap

Saturday, January 18th, the Padres held a public memorial service for Jerry Coleman, and Padres Public was well-represented.

Along with myself, Rick & Beau of RJ’s Fro, Woe Doctor, and Avenging Jack Murphy all attended. Rick is working on a special Padres And Pints featuring portions of the memorial. But that’s a few weeks away.

The ceremony took place on a stage placed strategically on the field. The podium was located above the second baseman’s usual position on the infield. Approximately 5,000 fans filled up Field Sections 111-115 in Petco Park. The Coleman family, VIPs, current & former players & coaches, broadcasters, and US Marines sat in front of the stage. And the Marine Corps Recruit Depot band was off to the right of that.

I brought my camera, so let’s see some of the photos I took.

The Padres had Jerry’s star hanging in the radio booth.

Tim Flannery performed his song “The Man Who Hung The Stars”

Joe Torre spoke on behalf of the Commissioner’s Office and Major League Baseball

Ted Leitner received a standing ovation after his eulogy.

Lt Gen John Toolan, commanding officer of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, presided over the Marine Corps honor guard for Lt Col Coleman

“Celebrating a life well lived. Always in our hearts.”

Ron Fowler announced the Padres this season will wear a patch on all jerseys to honor Jerry: A star with the initials JC inside.

Corey Brock had a nice writeup of the ceremony for MLB.com, which included a quote from Andrew Cashner:

San Diego pitcher Andrew Cashner certainly didn’t have the history with Coleman that many others did, though he found himself drawn to Coleman, so much so that he made it a point to seek him out before every home game.

“I always asked him to tell me something new,” Cashner said. “He always had something funny to say. I remember one day I saw him and he asked if they were ever going to let me hit.”
