Batman Forever: RIP Tony Gwynn (1960-2014)

We lost another great one today.

gwynnsix95-1Tony Gwynn, Baseball Hall of Famer and “Mr. Padre,” died today at the age of 54.

I’m terribly sad at this news.

Tony Gwynn was not just my favorite athlete, but my favorite person in sports.  I don’t like to use the words “idol” or “hero” when talking about a game.  But Tony was the closest thing I’ll ever get to either of those things.

2014 was already one of the worst years in San Diego’s sports history with the passing of Colonel Jerry Coleman in January.  It just got a whole lot worse today.

Rest in peace, Tony.  Say “Hey!” to the Colonel for us.

Rest in peace, Tony. You almost single-handedly brought a love of baseball to a whole generation of San Diegans like me – I woke up every morning as a kid to that “Batman Forever” poster and another from the brown-and-orange days about “Hard Work in the Right Field” on my wall, and literally wore out your set of instructional VHS tapes. We’ll miss you.
