The Lake Elsinore Storm announced today that the SDSU Aztecs and USD Toreros will play a baseball game at The Diamond in Lake Elsinore on Thursday, February 25th at 6:00pm.
“I am proud to have the Lake Elsinore Storm and their beautiful ballpark involved in the inaugural Tony Gwynn Week events. The spectacular job the Storm staff did hosting the 2015 NCAA Regionals makes this venue an immediate player in the world of college baseball.”
Jack Murray, Tony Gwynn Classic founder and director
The game will act as a tuneup game for the inaugural Tony Gwynn Classic — a tournament featuring SDSU, Bryant University, University of Kentucky, UC Santa Barbara, USD, University of Nebraska, Tulane University, and Arizona University — being held February 26-28 at both schools. The teams will be split into two four-team brackets and the winners will meet in the championship game on Sunday, February 28 at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
Tickets for the Tony Gwynn Classic can be purchased at their website.
“We are extremely pumped to be playing in Lake Elsinore. The facility is one of the best in Minor League Baseball and is right up the road from San Diego. What a great experience for both the Aztecs and Toreros!”
Rich Hill, Toreros Head Coach
The neutral site match-up February 26th at The Diamond is the first of three meetings between SDSU and USD this season. SDSU will host USD on March 1 and the Toreros will take on the Aztecs at Fowler Park on April 12.
This will be the second time SDSU has taken the field at The Diamond in the last year, as the Aztecs were one of four teams to participate in an NCAA Regional at the facility last May.
“This is an awesome opportunity for both USD and SDSU to showcase our programs and get some exposure to a potential new fan base. The stadium itself is a great venue and this is a chance for us to return for a game against our local rival that should get the fans of both programs excited. It’s a great way to kick off the Tony Gwynn Classic Weekend.”
Mark Martinez, Aztecs Head Coach
Tickets for the game at The Diamond are on sale now and can be purchased online at stormbaseball.com. All seats are $12, and students with school ID can purchase day-of-game tickets at the box office for $10.
