Padres Commercials? Padres Commercials!

A little over a year ago I wrote that The Padres Are Blowing it. That statement feels vague. I was speaking specifically about marketing the team to the casual fans of San Diego:

Fortunately, I have a solution! The Padres need to take a portion of the windfall they received from Fox and start advertising the f*ck out of this team. I’m talking about commercials, people. The funny ones that say, “Hey! We’re a bunch of good dudes and you need to get yourself to Petco Park to support us. Dammit!”

It took over a year but the Padres have finally produced a commercial to promote the team rather than a give-away. Yesterday Wayne Partello tweeted a link to this gem advertising the opening series against the Dodgers:

Until the embed-code works properly you’ll have to enjoy these screen-grabs (link to new commercial).

Beat LA 1

Is that Mark Kotsay scrubbing spikes?

Beat LA 2

This is good. We’ve got some fan favorites with Everth Cabrera and Chris Denorfia. There’s up-and-comer Tyson Ross, as well as front office favorite Yonder Alonso. Then there’s some guy with a beard wearing a blue T-shirt. I thought it looked like Mark Kotsay but maybe it’s a clubhouse attendant. But the gold within this commercial is the anti-Dodger sentiment. A campaign build around beating Los Angeles will always be right.

This is a good start for Wayne Partello and company. What’s next?

I like that they’re focusing on the team/players, a big step in the right direction. However, I can’t say this feels any different to me than the stuff they’ve been doing for years. It just makes me feel kind of…uncomfortable.

I haven’t lived in SD in over 10 years; I try and keep up with the commercials over that
time though. They’ve generally been bad, but that commercial has me pumped!

That looks like Dale Thayer, and it looks like he’s sharpening, not cleaning his spikes.

  • Nathan Veale

    I wish it was funny.

    • Baby steps, Nate. Baby steps.

Now that they have a commercial they need to start showing the personalities of some of the players. We need funny – I totally agree.
