Links: All sorts of stuff to read today

I don’t usually do links for a host of reasons. That isn’t true. There’s only one reason. I don’t do links because I don’t have time. But today is different for two reasons:

  1. I have time*.
  2. I have so many Padres related articles open in my browser that I would feel terrible if I didn’t share them with my fellow fans**.

* This isn’t really true. I’ve simply calculated that the things I could be doing can certainly wait.

** A lie by omission. While a true statement I think I’m really more focused on myself and what’s good for my computer and I. Because I haven’t been able to read all of these articles I need a handy page to access each link. Which is to say I really need to close each open window because my fossil of a Macbook is heating up and ready to blow.

Now that the truth is before us, allow me to share . . .

Presented in no particular order:

Wishful Thinking [Sports on Earth]

This is about the Padres most recent international signing, Cuban RHP Odrisamer Despaigne. Despaigne signed without the fanfare accompanying players like Yasiel Puig but the article suggests the pitcher could outperform his Cuban league numbers. At least that’s what I’ve been told. I haven’t read this article yet.

How injury has changed Padres’ Cashner for good [Fox Sports – Eno Sarris]

I have read this and it’s fantastic. Eno Sarris (of Fangraphs) examines Andrew Cashner’s evolution from fireballing-deer-killer to tactical-pitcher-who-merely-kills-deer-when-it-tickles-his-fancy. This article has it all: GIFs, charts, photographs of Andrew Cashner’s hands, and a reference to dressing the deer. You should enjoy it.

Probable Pitchers [Padres.com – Corey Brock]

Corey gives us the pitching match-ups for the week and if you’re a fan of young dynamic arms this may be the time to get down to Petco Park. The week begins with Royals’ young-gun Yordano Ventura and then on Wednesday the Padres throw Andrew Cashner against James Shields. By Friday fans are primed for a special treat when Tyson Ross faces Jose Fernandez. It’ll be a shove-a-thon at the yard all week long.

Bowa’s Back in Town Causing a Stir: Some Cheer, Some Jeer, as Former Padre Manager Returns [LA Times – Bill Plaschke]

This is from 1988 but it came to my attention as I watched a discussion unfold about former Padres President Chub Feeney:

Apparently @RallyPlantain was also friends with the fellow who held up the Scrub Chub sign. Fun!

From No. 1 draft pick to prison inmate: The Matt Bush story [Fox Sports – Gabe Kapler]

Ex-ball player Gabe Kapler has proven himself to be an engaging writer so I imagine this story on former teammate Matt Bush will be a good read. Is Matt Bush on the road to redemption? I don’t know. I haven’t read it yet.

Peoria’s a long way from Petco Park [San Diego Reader – David Alton Dodd]

Haven’t. Read. It. But the focus appears to be Tommy Medica in Spring Training this year. I like Peoria. I like Tommy Medica. And I like David Alton Dodd. I look forward to reading this.

The Padres are popular today. If you find anything else throw it in the comments section.
