Fowler, Seidler, O’Malley – Who are you?

I just read a short blog from Ben Higgins this morning about the Garfinkel resignation and he ended it with this:

Everything Tom Garfinkel touched didn’t turn to gold, but I liked his ideas and what he stood for. I still have no idea what the Fowler/Seidler/O’Malley group is all about.

Great question, Ben. Who are these guys?

I’m going to try to help Ben, because I think I may know the answer.

The Fowler/Seidler/O’Malley group are a collection of wealthy fellows who believe in intangibles. S0 they gave approval to Josh Byrnes to lock up Mark Kotsay as a veteran presence and experienced pinch hitter. Mark Kotsay has zero hits in his last 22 ABs.

The Fowler/Seidler/O’Malley group are a collection of wealthy fellows who believe in a power bat. So they gave approval to Josh Byrnes to lock up Carlos Quentin (a designated hitter) and gave him a no-trade clause to patrol left field and smash baseballs. He’s been doing pretty well with the smashing lately.

The Fowler/Seidler/O’Malley group are a collection of wealthy fellows who believe in the power of a cheap platoon. So they gave Josh Byrnes approval to extend Chris Denorfia last summer, avoided arbitration with Will Venable during the winter, and “boom”, cheap platoon in place.

The Fowler/Seidler/O’Malley group are a collection of wealthy fellows who believe in avoiding the radio for pertinent information about players. So they inadvertently suggested they would make Chase Headley the richest Padre ever after he had said that he would not negotiate an extension during the season. Ooops? Chase has been in the crapper ever since.

The Fowler/Seidler/O’Malley group are a collection of wealthy fellows who believe in things. So they accepted Tom Garfinkel’s resignation and are prepared to show San Diego what they believe. I think?

This is all very cynical but cynicism is the inevitable byproduct of decisions that keep a 4th place team, who finished 18 games behind the Giants last season, in tact.

So, Fowler/Seidler/O’Malley group – who are you?

What do you think?

This new ownership couldn’t have had high expectations for the Padres in 2013. They make very few public statements at all, but the main interpretation of Garfinkel leaving is that they’re disappointed with the on-the-field product. But what do you expect from a team that is still rebuilding? Now, we technically shouldn’t still be rebuilding in 2014, and this ownership group does have to walk-the-walk in some capacity right? It just seems strange to implicate blame on someone when you haven’t really tried yourself.
