Spring Training or Bust

I’m probably one of the only people in the world who collects Padres programs. I love them mainly because I can look back in the old ones and find articles about upcoming prospects or seasons of promise. Us Padres fans know better than to believe these articles and know who the real prospects are nowadays but back in the 80’s and 90’s we got excited by these. The programs listed here are newer though. I’ve been going to Peoria regularly for the past 4 years now. Before that I had a couple seasons scattered around but it wasn’t until 2010 where the trip was mandatory every year. Let’s take a look back at the last 4.

In 2010, Adrian Gonzalez and Ichiro graced the cover of Volume 1 of the On Deck program. It’s similar to the Padres Blue Print programs. Same size, free, similar content.

In 2011 Adrian was no longer a Padre. So who did they get for Volume 2? Mat Latos. He’s sure to be here for years right? Felix Hernandez took home the honors for the Mariners.

What in the Madden Curse is going on here? Back to back years now, the previous years Padre is in another uniform. So in 2012 and a new contract only weeks away Cameron Maybin was the coverboy for Volume 3, while King Felix took home the honors for his 2nd straight year for the Mariners. Maybin would have a so-so year in 2012 but thankfully is back in 2013 hoping to rebound. The curse is over!! Or is it?

Another King Felix cover for the Mariners. And who do we have for the Padres? Chase Headley! Sweet glorious Headley! Wait….the same Headley who just fractured his thumb? Ah crap. The On Deck curse lives on. I just hope we don’t have a new cover representative in 2014.
